Re-stage this image with my black pleated kimono , the Japanese mask on a bare tree on a field
Das Zettle spiel - choreographed performance
two or three performers with the task of picking up a piece of paper from the floor without touching the floor with anything but the bottom of their feet.

3 stages / rounds of the paper shrinking.

Something between a tribal - animalistic ritual and a boxing ring.

But instead of battling each other the 'opponent' is a piece of paper which adds a type of humour to it.
Introducing the 'players' - should be dancers - maybe contact 'the progressive wave'?
Animalistic movement
Instead of fighting players support eachother; e.g. like in boxing pep talk , shoulder rub etc.
Animalistic expressions
This type o set up is perfectly suited for fashion film because it will focus on the garments close up and movement in them;

(Problem that could occur is that there might not be a collection that would allow for this type of movement...however, there could be a process of removing more and more garments)

With a simpler idea there can me more of a focus on art direction:
_one location
_one scene with a lot of action
_it's about a concept and communicating an idea rather than telling a story through action and dialog or several scenes and locations
Accompanying music inspiration: Canela En Surco 100 - John Talabot aka Nohj Atotbal

Smile or Die! // Conform or get thrown out
Inspired by the way that 'The Lobster' criticises societies structure and expectations concerning relationships the idea is to criticise the societal portrayal of happiness and how we deal with those who do not follow these guidelines.

The necessity for others to be conform with our ideas of 'being normal' in society has left traces throughout history. From witch hunting to lobotomising people who could not function normally, people unable to be happy and play their role.

_ The film could play in a clinic for smile therapy - those who cannot be healed will be thrown out in trash bags.

_ // therapy or surgery and this is rehabilitation centre?

_ Treatment that somehow involves the sunglasses - either you get them during or after treatment? As identifiers? Or rather the chin straps as identifiers?

_ Another possible use for the sunglasses: smile so bright it hurt someones eyes ..?

_ David Lynch reference: use the technique of having people say something/move their mouth and only the eery gibberish sound is audible.
This dress is very dystopian; reminds of feeling/ looks in the 5th Element; Blade runner; Ghost in a Shell; the Hunger Games;(movie were they have robot waitresses that sleep in pods ?) Could feel like a dystopian society - reminiscent of the gladiator battles but more of a parody.
This is what the treatment could look like!
And when you come out of it you are left with this jaw-head-strap.
What exactly happens in the treatment remains unclear.
Yorgos Lanthimos - the Lobster ; story concept, use of (il)logic atmosphere
Due to the division between all white looks, all blue looks and the flower print - Could create categories through the clothing:

_the in treatment : white

_the cured : flowers

_the tossed out : blue - like Ikea trashbag
Might be an idea to externalise the blue flowers as a sign for something.
Could become a symbol in a vase on the table and never explained what it means. Can be just a 'hidden prop' that exists in the shot but not pulled into focus.
Collection by Mirjami Nyman
Rehabilitation centre / hotel / old people's home would be an easier location to find and shoot in.

It can be a cross over between a ward Hallway and a resort - like in the Lobster.
What kind of space would add something?
What kind of collection could work with the action?
A weird spectacle
Sevdaliza - I am Human video
The spectacle of looking:
Could also be that the garments are worn by everyone EXCEPT those battling; distinguishing the clothing as a sign of high-rack_ the observers. Garments could be worn by the opponents when coming in - as boxers usually do-.
The spectacle of looking & what is says about the society..
Male gaze - voyeurism -

With this video the image quality and dark and haziness of the pictures really adds to the moods - communicates a feeling.

The whole set-up feels very exclusive and reminds me of an underground illegal game - like betting on illegal fights.

This is a direction that feels interesting as the narrative around the 'Zettle Spiel'.

Potentially interesting locations in Weimar:
Location:
Could be really interesting to work in the way that Tim Walker does - by building a scene, much like a theatre set, in a room.

To make it easier, the whole thing could be set in a Schrebergarten. There are several in Weimar, would have to run around and find someone willing with a suitable garden.
+ in February it's cold + weather dependency
makes things difficult.

Themed mini golf location.
in Berlin:
Steinmetz gegenüber von Ostkreuz
The Furry shoes create a bridge between person and animal and conjures up idea of personified animals like the wolf in Red Riding Hood or of the 3 little pigs.
For me this immediately creates a fairytale connection.
Settings
Characters
The Schrebergarten reminds me of the day with Jur and Jansi on which they looked like garden Gnomes in a garden - I imagined them with:
a wheelbarrow
watering can

Faceless people who work at the dentist
But I've already done a type of dentistry thing
I like the idea of doing a fairly 'outside perspective'/theatre stage main camera set up and giving some of the characters a video camera/camcorder they film with - so the scene is shown from different perspectives - like a performance that is theatrically staged and filmed.
Again making the act of looking very central. ( Might work better for the 'Zettle Spiel' , where there is a group of spectators, would definitely add to a dystopian direction ; like Black Bear Black Mirror episode.)
Scene set-up - atmosphere:
Collection by Elisabeth von der Thannen
This action is quite difficult to connect with ANY collection (except for potentially some kind of sports wear , which would in turn not add but take from the action. Instead it could be turned around in a way that the focus is more on the people watching and sitting than it is on the spectacle of movement/moving spectacle. This would then seem like a waste though because the moving shots are what makes it interesting.
Added bonus: in terms of location this feels very do-able in a place like Weimar.
This look comes from having a tooth ache.

Collection by Victor Clavelly
The collection concept is fULLY worked outby Victor into a 'fashion horror adevnture game' dubbed SAVE ROOM.

The collection is cast in the context of a Playstation 2 game that includes Horror characters, trolls, goblin types and fashion. The character room / setting of the game was fully rendered out and designed by Victor.
Costume design for another world
This feels like a main character that goes on a quest - a knight in shining armour; ready to fight.
An actual threat.
Stand out pieces
More basics of the collection
Designer's setting /vision
Entering into game - hooked to a game ? - stuck inside a game?

First room : a gamers dingy room - think bandersnatch netflix - think Paprika - think gamer basement - someone who lives at home with his mom
First Idea was to try and do it how Petra Collins did for Gucci but this was actually putting in and viewing the tape on TV and the transition into a pink fog from another room. This is the 'poof' trick of fashion film that I dislike and then can only kind of work if at all with a professional production team.
Another thing that comes to mind is Spykids were they get sucked into the game...

Or alternatively you can create a 'reveal moment' - start inside the game and finish showing the video game player..
One scene - limited action - like gardening & all the effort is put into building the space...

This might be more do-able in collaboration with other students..
But even in such a high level production with such great talents and budget it's hard to make a dystopian set up look convincing.
Filming will be comparatively but preproduction in terms of styling and set building will be intense!
Bringing the outside in -
Could go in the direction of the instillation that played a lot with sound in the space - giving a similar alienating feeling of having outdoor sound indoors.
The probem/difficulty with this world is that it's almost impossible to create in a film. Digital rendering in a game engine? Yes - in your head? Yes. But as a real world set - difficult.

Expect potentially green screen ..?
This is the most ambiguous collection. Although so clear in its own narrative it becomes hard to create the correct cinematic representation. I can imagine it going into multiple directions

A very grey - subdued atmosphere
aliens at school !
Classroom scene

This idea that 'they live among us' - that makes Men in Black so atmospheric and memorable - or also in Halloween Town high.

Very Gucci -esque - like each character comes in and there kind of like stereotypes but hyper stylised (something Gucci does so well) then aliens.
How difficult is it to use the green screen ? Because it could become very useful and turn out well....

You could set up a school in a surreal environment ?

Or also short weird conversation pieces of single people in front of the screen in surreal environments.
I could see this one as really challenging to the way I tell stories. It might be nice to collaborate with someone on this one ?
With the video game direction I run the risk of going rather 'cute' - but I would want to keep true to the dark edge of the original vision.
This break /'Stilbruch' between the Fairytale gothic and the Hyper modern : bed; floor; mac and phone, chair, table, lamp, posters - somehow create the perfect merge between the real and the imagined. The visual reads 'this is the world I live and work in, this is my world - welcome"
Conceptual starting points
Direction
Dark quest videogame-tale
Hyper computergame
On this level it Wwuld require a TONE of hyper-good animation and would become less a filming and more an animation project.
This approach would be a in STUDIO approach - potentially with a green screen and would be in a sense rough in allowing a view behind the scenes potentially.
Intermediate estimation
Will require multiple shots / a tight shot list and storyboard - quite complex filming - finding the 'right' location and acting from the models.
To understand or not understand whats happening - to get the weird atmosphere I want to create, will require strong characters and acting.
This is the most "all around" endeavour, with neither a particularly heavy focus on set design or art direction but everything equally + cinematically challenging.
Intermediate estimation
The action would flow meaning that filming will be less restricted by storyboard frames that NEED to be there.
Here Set design and Hair and Makeup would really carry the story and require a lot of preproduction and professional execution.

* Could even opt for outdoors - But in February will be cold - if Set design becomes too difficult.

At the same time this type of action is not so limited to the collection and could be created with another collection.

Would offer ample opportunity to show the clothing though.
* add multichannel idea:
Models filming each other offering multiplied footage of the actions

Nerdy LAN party - those people who meet in dingy rooms where there are a lot of statues of fairies and dragons and nights and play games ?

People playing dress up - idea of going into the game - merging realities

- room in Bonn .. as inspiration

Set location: someones basement
Gardening meets mountain hut - urlaub auf der Berghütte.
Gardening in Schrebergarten or more in the Valley ?
Sitting around a table- playing Dungeons and Dragons!

In a room filled with statues
One: is very somber and grey
David Lynch + Men in Black feels - weird dark sound language >

I'd forgotten but subconsciously remembered that here the alien language is also used to signify alien entities & it works really well.
(e.g. min 40)
*Kevin Pleiter's knitwear could be suitable- move-able for this type of action.
But then the film interpretation lacks narrative ... only about movement of garments. I guess I'm realising/re-affirming that aiming for something that is 'just beautiful' but lacks narrative isn't enough.
The idea of a totem from the world.
Blade Runner
The 5th Element
Hunger Games
A$AP Rocky - Fukk Sleep ft. FKA twigs
Paired with Dystopian society:
vs.
Main inspiration 'the Lobster'
"Deals with extremes of human emotion by factoring most of the emotion out of the equation. All three films progress as though Lanthimos wants to isolate human behavior from the feelings that drive it, the better to analyze people's choices. He creates unnatural situations to question what's natural ...His aggressively flat performances and spell-it-all-out scripts are distancing, but he operates as though the only way to see a situation's absurdity is from a distance."
Analysis:
Unnatural situations > people acting and reacting to each other that seems to 'make no sense' - general storyline of turning people into animals > absurd > surreal > yet mirroring very real truths about society

' spell it out scripts' > being extremely literal in the translation of an underlying truth of society > e.g. people being together because of 'compatibility' exaggerated to e.g. having nose bleeds or wearing glasses

'aggressively flat performances' > unnatural, very cold, emotionless, roboting acting, tone of voice

entire package is distancing > because the emotionless ness feels unnatural, the 'matter of fact' way of inter-human relationship feels alien. But because the world is in itself cohesive it feels like we as an audience are missing something because to us it seems too strange, to the characters it is 'the norm' and nothing is explained.
Would have to find models who would be up for being packaged and moved.
Waiting room to go into therapy.
Lining up to get meds.
Wierd behaviour. Like e.g. just standing facing a wall.
I do like this starting point but I feel like the other concept has more substance - and as they are very similar I can see them flowing together. Smile therapy might essentially be like a visit to the dentist.
Intermediate estimation
Triggers idea for a Puppet show - / Puppentheater;
Either the entire set is the Puppet theatre or they are performing a pupet theatre - or it is both as a METAPICTURE.
Or they are inside a multilayered image or in the picture viewing glasses.
Direction 1: Gardening
Direction 2: Berghütte
Location inspiration
Cinematic inspiration
To make the styling odder it might be something to keep in mind that a green morph suit + headscarf is an interesting look.
Similar atmosphere - a space for such characters to live in. A scene in something - like the portrayal of places on a theatre stage.

Like in the one theatre play I went to where they used camcorders on stage to project life - giving the audience a new perspective on the action. Turning it into more of a performance.
Multiple characters sitting in a classroom, each full-filling some kind of stereotype. With much more subdued and grey colorsceme.
Although I'm personally not a big fan of this video it is interesting for how it uses movement to create something odd and different and very memorable.
The vibe
Optional Meta approach:
One direction could be to build a frame for the entire scene and make it feel almost like a 3D paper - puppet theatre. Maybe even hand puppets could make an appearance, which would create the meta picture.

However, this seems like it would be a huge amount of effort with little effect payoff and potentially only confuse the viewer in the final version.
Another idea would be to suggest that the entire scene is a picture which could be viewed inside a 3D view-master.
*tableux vivant
What was so memorable and impressive was how the image INSIDE the viewmaster is portrayed - really looking like a 3D slide photograph.

Would be worth thinking about if we can recreate this type of effect.

e.g. for the credit reel.
This is what Elisabeth v.d. Thannen wrote in her email.

The collection ´woodkids´ plays with elements of women´s traditional costumes (Tracht) from the Bregenzerwald (Austria), memories of childhood and the hard work in the rural countryside. In which context do we place clothing and when do garments become to traditional costumes, are questions I ask myself in my graduation collection.
From what the Designer says about her own collection as well as the details of the collection speak much more for a 'Berghütten' country feeling than a gardening situation.
DECISION:
Direction 2: Berghütte
is more suitable for the collection and designer vision.
This is what Mirjami Nyman wrote in her email.

My research is built on study of dentists and the history of undergarments. I also started to explore beauty ideals, through looking into braces and corsets.

This made me realize everything sterile, white and neatly straight is a sort of status symbol. All this is summarized in the name of the collection ”smile or die”.

My fabric choices come quite literally from my research. I was interested in the contrast between white medical gauze fabrics and rustling plasticky materials you can observe at the dentist. I tried to mimic this disposable plastic material in my suits and jackets. I love how the traditional man worn pantsuit that resonates an idea of power, is suddenly made from trash.
I can art direct Alena's clip
In this moment the eery sound of birds reminds me of a sound I'd like to use for this video.
